Dr. Greer started playing piano in grade school. He took up guitar shortly after seeing The Rolling Stones on Casey Kasem’s America’s Top 10. Although he loved Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, Eddie Van Halen was his idol. Dr. Greer estimates he missed only two or three Van Halen tours since first seeing them in 1981. The highlight of their show for him was always Eddie’s spotlight solo; his death in 2020 at age 65 has only reinforced his status as one of the most talented guitarists ever. Dr. Greer has played with his band, Crunch Time, for almost 20 years. He has played Eddie’s solo, “Eruption,” with them many times but, for this year’s Doctors In Recital, he will be playing a more extended solo that incorporates many of Eddie’s unique and innovative techniques.
